Thurby - Thursday at the Derby

Thurby

That's Thursday before Derby,

which is today!

Carrie came to paint Derby hat coasters
Saturday,
and today she's at Thurby at Churchill Downs.

I'm sure she's having fun in her beautiful dress
and her gorgeous hat she had made.

I hope she had as much fun today as we did on Sturday
painting these coasters.

I'd bet on her being a knock out today!

Hope you had fun today Carrie.

Welcoming Artist/Drawing Instructor Jeremy Cobb

Welcome Jeremy Cobb

Right here in Carrollton, KY is a young man, Jeremy Cobb,
who is joining River Run Gallery and will be teaching drawing classes.

Below is an example of Jeremy's drawing skills.

Jeremy was raised in Carroll County and
graduated from Carroll County High School in 1995,
and continues to live here.

He received his Bachelors degree in Fine Art from the University of Louisville
and a Masters degree from the University of the Cumberlands.

His main focus is drawing and he will be offering drawing classes
in River Run Gallery beginning with an intro to drawing,
Tuesday, May 12, 5-6 p.m.

This first class is open to anyone who would like to improve their drawing skills
and is introductory in nature.  A supply list for this class will be posted and this class will only be $10.

During this introductory class Jeremy will be demonstrating a basic gray scale and how to achieve it, as well as several other beginning rules of drawing.   Participants will be doing a sketch of a simple subject.

He hopes to show you, you can draw and form a class of not more than 8 people to meet twice a month on Tuesdays from 5-7 p.m. beginning on May 26 at a cost of $25 per lesson.

This is Jeremy and an oil painting he did of his mom and dad.

The goal of these classes is to start at the beginning adding new skills during every class.  Students should be 14 and up and will bring their own supplies.
A supply list will be posted in the next few days.

The cost for each two hour class will be $25 and will be every other Tuesday
for six lessons, spread out over three months.

At the end of three months, the first class will move on to an intermediate level and a new class of beginners will form.

This is an incredible opportunity for those interested in learning to draw, or improving or refreshing drawing skills to do so at the hands of someone with talent, skill and knowledge.

I hope you'll join us,
or pass this along to someone you think might be interested.

Dogwood Beauty

Spring in the South

Oh My Gosh!
This painting was so fun!

Here's a very short video with the evidence of fun!

Talk about proof of  FUN!

Now that's proof.

Carrollton, KY is at the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers
and that makes for a perfect environment for flowering trees,
especially dogwoods.

Mid to late April every year we have a spectacular sight here in Carrollton.

White, pink and red dogwoods blooming up and down every street in town.

It is a gorgeous,
I mean drop dead gorgeous sight.

We are so lucky!!!

And now

They are blooming inside River Run Gallery!

Thanks for stopping in today.
Let's paint together sometime.

The First Saturday in May

Spring in Kentucky

Means getting ready for the Derby!

I guess the whole world doesn't stop for the first Saturday in May,

but in Kentucky,
especially near Loouuaavlle,
(yeah, we really say it like that)

it's a pretty big deal.

Carrollton is about an hour north of Loouuaavlle,
so it's a pretty big deal here too!

Today in River Run Gallery,
we were painting Derby Hat Coasters.

And are they ever cute!
These two did a super job on their creations!

Judy and Susanne were here painting a set of four coasters
with a different hat on each one.

They decorated their hats with ribbon, feathers, flowers and beautiful color.

Each coaster is porcelain and has several coats of indoor/outdoor varnish on before they paint and then several more after they finish painting.

There are also some available for sale in the gallery, $25 per set.

This class will repeat at noon on Saturday, April 25, $25.

Springtime in the South

This lovely painting may be a little more challenging than some other paintings, but the colors are beautiful and so fun to paint.
Thursday, April 23, 6-9 p.m. $40

Gussy up your garden with this fun Derby Hat Garden Stone.
Sat., April 25, 10 a.m. - noon 12" x 12" porcelain stone
with several coats of indoor/outdoor varnish on it before painting and we'll get several more coats on it after painting,
weather permitting.
$30.

Kentucky Derby Hat

Kentucky Derby Hat Garden Stone

Could your garden use a little color
and style right about now?

Here's one way to show off a portion of
your yard.

Or welcome someone at your door.

Or lean up on a bench.

Or,

Well, you get the picture.

The class is fun and easy,
and you have something beautiful for your home.
$30

Mountain Marsh

Mountain Marsh

12" x 24" Acrylic on a panel, with approx 3" wood frame.
$300 + shipping.

In the mountains of Utah, you either think of dessert or mountains.
I've never thought of marsh land.
But,
there it is,
between Logan and Tremonton,
what I consider beautiful marsh land.

The day I was there there were beautiful reflections, mountains, marsh grass and a beautiful sky.
All things I love to paint.

This painting can be seen in River Run Gallery

Springtime in the South

Springtime In The South

I'll be teaching this painting in River Run Gallery Fun Art Studio
Thursday, April 23, 6-9 p.m. $40

This painting is everything wonderful about spring.
The background represents spring colors and
then has a beautiful dogwood branch on top of all that color.

This painting is a little more challenging and would be best done
by someone who has taken a class or two with me in the past.

It will also take a minimum of 2 1/2 hours and maybe all 3 allotted.

Tree branches are fun and then those beautiful blooms just pop off the canvas.

Please join me and create your own
Springtime In The South.

Fashion Divas

Fashion and the Kentucky Derby

Well Yeah!

Part of the excitement of the derby is finding the dress,
the shoes,
and then,

THE HAT!

These ladies were in River Run Gallery today painting their own Derby Hats.

Suzanne was working on some detail in her painting.

Ann and Suzanne are completely into their paintings.

Didn't they do a super job on their hats.

There is lots of leeway on these hats, giving it your own voice.

And of course we had to have a moment of silly.

thanks for stopping in today.

Leave a comment and let them know how super they did.

Thanks again.

Spring Breakin. . .

Spring Break in River Run Gallery

OK, I know it's not the beach,
but,
it is fun!!!

I offered a daytime class during spring break,
not realizing exactly how popular it might be,

so I ended up offering two sessions of the same painting on the same day.

 First Session in the morning.

Lots of kids, moms, friends, and art

 Drying those paintings.

Finished paintings in the morning session.

Look at all those swirling flowers.

 Second session in the afternoon
had a family come in and mom and dad helped each child
on their paintings.

These girls did their paintings in lots of purples, lavenders, and pinks
because they had purple rooms
and of course, these masterpieces were going to hang
in their rooms.

It is so fun to see how each student approaches their painting.

Some are very shy and meticulous,
some are very free and loose,
some want no help,
others want lots of help,
some want to follow the directions,
others want to go out on their own and listen to their own drummer.

It's just like the adults in their world.

Thanks for coming in and sharing your spring break with me.

There is sort of a beach behind the gallery,
on the Ohio River.

Thanks for stopping by.

Granddaughters in the Gallery

How Fun
Granddaughters in the Gallery!!!

Most of my grandchildren don't live near me.
So having two of my granddaughters, from different parents,
is a treat, for ME, if not for them.

We worked hard on this spring swirling flowers.

America, age 12, on the left, and Karen, age 8 on the right,
finished their swirling flower painting.

We had fun and some silliness along the way.

What's the point of painting with your Grammy if there is no silliness.

Painting a Tree Swing

Wednesday Morning Painting Group

This group was hilarious today as we painted this tree swing.

This short video gives you a feel for how the class was going.

You ca see they were all doing great,
but when I told them it was time to make a little video,
they all started whining!

This painting is lots of fun, with lots of creative opportunities.

Putting that big circle as the back drop seems easy,
but it has it's challenges.

   Whining and giggling.

It's all good!

Look at these finished beauties.

And the paintings are great too!

And The Amount is Final

Carroll County Student Artists Raised . .

Drum Roll pleeease. . .

$218.60!!!!!

My student artists are the best.  They put themselves out there by having their art on display and having people vote on their art with cold hard cash.

The painting that raised the most money in the adult category was. . .
Monica Daniel with her pansies.

Monica raised $28.63

Monica wins five tubes of professional acrylic paint valued at $60.

Lily Frye won first place int he children's division by raising $14.32 with her giraffe.

Lily, a student at Kathryn Winn elementary school also wins 5 tubes of student grade acrylic paint valued at $40.

Sandy Hirn won 2nd place in the adult category by raising $25.49 with her painting
Sunflowers in a Jar

Sandy wins a free class valued at $40.

Rileigh Darnold won 2nd place in the children's division raising $8.33 with
Daisies.

Rileigh is also a student at Kathryn Winn  and will receive a free class valued at $25.

This has been a fun project and I would like to thank all the student artists who participated.
We had 27 pieces of art and I learned a lot and I think my students learned a lot.
We had a great reception where so many people came in and voted for their favorite paintings with their cold hard cash.

All the money raised goes to Carroll County Animal Support.
My understanding is that it takes approximately $150 to spay one animal,
so we have enough for one and maybe some dog food or whatever they need.

If you did not get to come in to see the show,
here is a little video of the the artwork on display.

All artists can now come in and pick up their art.

And again, thanks to everyone who made this possible.
